Am I in Brooklyn?

Hello!

Just got to Mal's apartment after a busy morning of moving in (well dropping off my stuff, I couldn't bring myself to unpack just yet lol), getting lost on the subway alone, seeing public um pooping?, and a yummy challah sandwich in Chelsea.

So, Mal, Afton, and Carrie (Mal's roomies), spent the last night at the hotel with me and we woke up and moved my stuff over to FIT. We decided to subway it back to Stuytown. This seemed like a good idea until we were running to the train and I was the only one to catch it. I watched as the doors closed and I was on my way to the East Village alone. This wouldn't have been so tragic except as soon as I sat down I realized I was on the wrong train. ugh.

I got off at the next stop (8th ave) and got on what I thought was the right L. Well 20 min later I am standing in Brooklyn and a man is pooping on the stairs ahead of me...I'm not kidding...I was mortified. Only in NYC haha.

I quickly hurried back to the subway and found the right train and am safely back in the Village.

We are now getting ready to head uptown to Central Park, Strawberry Fields, and whatever else we happen to stumble upon on the way. More later!

Hannah

Observations on NYC

Here are a few of the things I've noticed singe being in the city : )

-Leggings are acceptable forms of pants here...thank god : )
-Everyone knows you're from the Midwest when you apologize for bumping into people on the street...not that they know where the Midwest is (one person asked me if Missouri is a city...I was mortified)
-NYC weather is just as unpredictable...so it's probably going to snow tomorrow : P
-Construction workers really do yell at you when you walk by...starting a conversation with them doesn't get them to stop (believe me : )
-They think its cute when you say please and thank you.... not polite...cute
-Everyone is from somewhere else...EVERYONE.
-It truly is the greatest city in the world : )

Miss everyone terribly! More later!

XO love,
Hannah

Since when does May in NYC = Rain and 55 degrees??

So, today was my second day of work at alice + olivia and it was pretty similar to yesterday. I pulled samples, worked on fittings with models (even some kids for the children's line) and got some sushi from the place down the street : ).

Even though it was only my second day I am already starting to feel at home here. The people I work with are so nice and willing to help in any way they can. Everything today was going smoothly until they dropped the bomb, my supervisor is going to London next week on vacation and I am taking her place for a WEEK.

Not that I'm not confident with my interning abilities but for the love of god I don't know if I can do her JOB that she gets PAID for! Basically I'll be in charge of all of the import samples and finished products coming in and out of the office, organizing fittings with fit models, putting together reports on the status of the different lines (there are about a million...okay there are seven but still) and doing various other odd jobs around the office. AHHH I guess its sink or swim time!

Tonight I went out to dinner with my mom (she's still here thank god I'd be a mess without her, she's leaves tomorrow : (  and sisters and then off to sake and sushi with Mal and her roomies. It was just what I needed to get my mind off things and relax : )

Tomorrow is my last day of the week and then its the WEEKEND! I can't wait to explore NYC with everyone and get to know my new home for the next ten weeks!

XO love,

Hannah

PS: The cutest thing in the world happened today. I went to the showroom to pull some samples for my boss and I walked in and the designer is sitting on the floor with her baby daughter Eloise and all her friends (and their nannies haha) having a baby music class in the middle of the showroom. I about died it was so precious : )

First Days in NYC!

Hello!

I know its super cheesy but I figured the best way to document this summer was with a blog. I'm still trying to figure it all out so no judgement yet!

I've only been in NYC for a few days but its been incredible so far. I've been living out of the Affinia Hotel off 7th Ave since I got here and its been lovely! Room service, big beds, and a maid are certainly the way to go in the city! Unfortunately, this will not be my digs for the rest of the summer as I move into FIT dorms on Saturday! Although it might be a flashback to Lathrop (ugh), I'm excited to be surrounded by other college students doing the same thing I am.

Navigating the city has been a lot easier than I thought it would be. It's basically a huge grid! (my iphone has been particularly helpful as well : )) and I have already explored the Garment District and Chelsea on my first day of work at Alice + Olivia! More on that later : ).

I had my first class at FIT last night and it was a little long (3 hours), but super interesting. I'm in a class with about 25 other interns and its basically to help us through the internship process. The people there are so talented and have all been doing this for so long, it was a little intimidating. They were shocked when I told them I was from Missouri, even more so when I said I went to school in Columbia! To them, its a world away. And it truly feels like it being here. I am already a little homesick for my little Ross Street Apartment and weekly Gumby's with Steph! But, no worries, there is PLENTY here to keep me occupied...

So, like I said, today was my first dat at Alice + Olivia. They are a luxury clothing line designed by Stacey Bendet located right off Bryant Park!

I am kind of the every-intern and I do a little bit of everything! Today, I sourced (looked for haha) stone embellishments for a top for a client, pulled samples for a meeting with Saks (ahh!), put together cost sheets, picked up swatches, and did some running back and forth for the design/import team! My favorite part was sourcing the stones because I got to run around the city on my own and choose what I thought would be best for the piece! I'm excited I chose this company because they truly seem invested in teaching me about the business and letting me work on the projects that I want to work on.  I'm also going to be working with the design team in putting together the 2010 collection!

I am currently sitting in the hotel, exhausted, but excited about the weeks to come! I'll be here until the beginning of August so everyone PLEASE visit! I love you all! More to come soon (and pictures once I figure it out!)
